Nantucket, MA
Since 1945, the Boys and Girls Club has been helping kids succeed. More than likely, all of us have or know someone whose life has been, influenced by the Boys & Girls Club. The New England PGA and its Professionals have been helping to give back to the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club for the past 19 years, each year more unique and special than the next, and this year was no different.
This past weekend on Nantucket, 32 NEPGA Professionals gathered for the 19th Annual Sam Sylvia Boys & Girls Club Pro-Am at picturesque Sankaty Head Golf Club in Siasconset, MA. What started on Saturday night at the traditional cocktail party, silent auction and raffle, finished on Sunday afternoon under clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70’s. The Professionals led groups of donors and volunteers for the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club around the links course, sharing laughs, stories and helping to raise money for a great cause in the shadow of one of the most famous lighthouses in the country.
While the main point of this traditional event is to raise significant funds for adolescents on Nantucket, in the background is a highly competitive golf tournament taking place. Each year many of the best Professionals in New England jump the puddle to play for the $5000 first place prize. At the end, one player was standing tall like the Red, White and Black lighthouse in the distance. Troy Pare, Head Golf Professional at Wannamoisett CC in Rumford, RI shot a great 2-under par 70 to win by one stroke over 3 other players. Troy bested Boomer Erick, PGA from Boston Golf Club, Ron Philo, PGA from Stowe Mountain Club and Phil Truono, PGA from Miacomet Golf Club. Rounding out the top 5 was Paul Parajeckas, PGA from Pleasant Valley Country Club with an even-par 72. In a classy move, Pare donated $1000 of his winnings back to the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club.
In the Team Contest, the team of Chris Hulme, PGA from Whitinsville GC with Paul Dutra, Rob Tedoldi, Jr. and Rob Gengras shot a 4-Under par 140 in the 2 Best Ball of 4 Gross Contest. The team of Phil Truono, PGA from Miacomet GC with Josh Davis, Tim Duncombe and Billy Bartleman shot an 18-under par 126 in the 2 Best Ball of 4 Net Contest.
Special thanks to Mark Heartfield, PGA, Host Professional at Sankaty Head and Phyllis McInerney, Executive Director of the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club for their organization of this event! |
